UNESCO BIOSPHERE RESERVE

UNESCO made the whole of Lanzarote a Biosphere Reserve in 1993. Not a park within it, not a stretch of coast, but the entire island. It happened largely on the strength of what one man prevented.

César Manrique came home in 1966 and spent the rest of his life arguing the island should refuse the concrete that consumed so much of the Spanish coast. He largely won. There are no high-rise hotels (Gran Hotel excluded), few billboards, and buildings are still whitewashed with green or blue doors and windows.
