Finding the Right Day Out in Lanzarote

One of the joys of Lanzarote is how much variety it offers for such a compact island. You can spend the morning face to face with a shark and the afternoon on a volcano, or swap the beach for a boat one day and a water park the next. The island’s days out fall into a few broad camps, and there’s genuinely something for every age, budget and energy level, whatever the weather.

Days Out for Families

Lanzarote is a superb island for a family holiday, and its family attractions are a big part of why. Rancho Texas Lanzarote Park, near Puerto del Carmen, is the island’s only zoo, combining animal shows, dolphins and sea lions with a proper water park, all in one Wild West-themed day. For cooling off and thrills, the island has two excellent water parks: Aquapark in Costa Teguise, the biggest on the island, with its famous high-adrenaline slides, and the newer Aqualava in Playa Blanca, home to the island’s only wave pool and open all year round. And when you fancy a break from the sun, the Lanzarote Aquarium in Costa Teguise, the largest in the Canaries, takes you through an underwater world of sharks, rays and tropical fish, complete with a walk-through tunnel. Between them, these attractions can happily fill several days of a family holiday.

Boat Trips and Days on the Water

With its clear waters, sheltered southern coast and protected marine reserves, the island is made for getting out on the sea. Lanzarote Catamaran and sailing trips head along the coastline to the beautiful Papagayo beaches, dropping anchor for swimming, snorkelling and lunch on board, while others cruise across to the island of La Graciosa. There are dolphin watching trips, sunset cruises, glass-bottom boats, and even a real passenger submarine that dives beneath the waves from the marina at Puerto Calero. Whether you want a lively family day with a barbecue and a splash, or a relaxed sail with a glass of something cold, a day on the water is one of the finest things you can do on the island.

Lanzarote Island Tours and Sightseeing

To see the very best of Lanzarote in one go, a guided tour is hard to beat. The island’s landscape is extraordinary, and a full-day tour takes the hassle out of exploring it, whisking you between the fire mountains of Timanfaya, the volcanic caves of Jameos del Agua and the Cueva de los Verdes, the clifftop views of the north, and the remarkable vineyards of La Geria, all with an expert guide and no driving or ticket queues to worry about. For first-time visitors especially, it’s the easiest way to get your bearings and tick off the island’s headline sights in a single, well-planned day.

Escape to La Graciosa

For something completely different, hop on the ferry from the north of Lanzarote to La Graciosa, the tiny eighth Canary Island. With no paved roads, barely a car in sight and some of the most beautiful unspoilt beaches in the Canaries, it’s a wonderful escape from the busier resorts, whether you go for the day to swim, cycle the sandy tracks and eat fresh fish by the harbour, or stay a night to have those wild beaches almost to yourself. It’s just 25 minutes across the water, but it feels a world away.

While Lanzarote enjoys sunshine for much of the year, the island’s days out are a great fallback for the occasional windy or cloudy spell too.
